Black History Month
The children of Harris Mayflower have continued their celebration of Black History Month into November after having the last two weeks of October out for half-term. Prior to half term, pupils had learned about Black History Month through in class sessions and assemblies. The children also took part in music workshops exploring a range of traditional styles, culminating with sharing assemblies so that the children could share what they learned with other classes.
This week, we have continued the celebration of Black History Month with lessons about a significant black figure from history, which will continue throughout the month of November. Each significant figure was carefully chosen in a way that links them to the black history within a particular phase group.
Years 1 and 2 will be celebrating a range of men and women from the field of medicine, linking to Mary Seacole who the children will learn about in history later in the year.
Years 3 and 4 will be following on from their learning about Walter Tull and will be learning about war heroes, including recipients of the Victoria Cross.
Year 5 will be linking their learning to the inspirational women from the book ‘Hidden Figures’ and will be celebrating significant black individuals from the field of Engineering and Science.
Year 6 will be preparing for their upcoming history unit of study by learning about black entrepreneurs in the years following the end of the slave trade.
Each week, phase groups will spend their assemblies sharing their learning about these historical figures and their significance in present day.
