Remembrance
This week, Mayflower chidlren have celebrated Armistice Day, which marked the 103rd anniversary of the end of World War I, by taking part in a range of activities.
First of all, year groups spent some time learning about the history of World War I before taking part in an art related activity, which ranged from collage to clay sculptures. Some of these outcomes were so incredible that we had to put them up on display on the classroom windows for the rest of the school to enjoy.
Additionally, children in Year 1-6 were allocated a particular World War I poem, written by British soldiers while serving in the
trenches of Europe. They discussed the images and meanings behind the words and followed up with a piece of writing, which used the grammatical structures of their chosen poem to achieve one of their writing targets.
Finally, the whole school took a pause from their learning to observe the annual two-minutes of silence at 11 O’clock on Thursday morning, Additionally, many adults and children decided to wear poppies to mark the occasion and show remembrance for all of those who were affacted by the First World War.
