Lucie wins a Diversity Award!
We are delighted that one of our amazing pupils, Lucie, was nominated and won the ‘Rising Star’ award at the Diversity Awards 2023.
In June 2022, Lucie was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour called a glioma which was identified through an MRI scan and neurosurgery was completed to relieve the pressure that had built up by excess fluid caused by the tumour. Lucie began a gruelling course of chemotherapy which would last 18 months, and she has amazed the staff at Mayflower with how resilient she has been, become a role model for children undergoing treatment which is just incredible given the circumstances.
After losing her hair, Lucie decided that it would be powerful to not cover this up and removed her wig whilst she was at school. She wore a feeding tube and educated younger pupils on why she needed to wear this. Throughout her treatment she has seen the positive in all situations, making the best of things when days have been particularly bad.
Lucie was asked about her award and said,
‘I won the Diversity Award and Miss Hanley nominated me. I felt overjoyed to receive it. Unfortunately, I was in hospital on that day. Miss Hanley went on Zoom so I could watch it. After the half term break, Miss Hanley gave me the award at school and I am super happy that I was able to get the award!’
