Black History Month Week 1
This week, Year 5 children have looked back in time and across the ocean to America in the 1950s. The U.S.A in the 1950s was a terrible time for racial segregation. Even though people of all backgrounds fought alongside each other in World War 2, people of different skin colours were still treated very differently in a lot of states. Black people were not allowed to attend the same schools, eat in the same restaurants, or even use the same bathrooms as white people. Even things as minor as drinking fountains were made for people of different skin colour. This week, our Year 5 pupils read the story of Hidden Figures and were inspired by the struggles of the women who refused to be held back by society. Our Children discussed the racial segregation and the impact this had on the American society at the time. They have written passionate arguments about the situation during the 1950s.
